We’re all just a side note in history. Here today, gone tomorrow. It just comes down to what we want to do with our short time in the sun.
ZEROMANCERS know exactly what they fill their lives with. For more than 20 years, the Norwegian electro-rock visionaries have acted as architects of the human being, as chroniclers of our worries and hopes, our love and our broken hearts. So far never particularly prone to nostalgia, the artist souls of Alex Møkleust and Kim Ljung have been changed noticeably by the long break since their fantastic last album “Bye, Bye Borderline”. After eight long years of silence, they return with the triumphant “Orchestra Of Knives”, a wistful, dark, bittersweet inventory of humanity, life and death.
From elegant electronics as ever, the new pieces draw an undreamt-of strength from the monumental arrangements and the foreboding aura.
Decorated by a diffuse nostalgia, reinforced by old family photos from Ljung’s archives, “Orchestra Of Knives” is ZEROMANCER’s long night of
the soul, an odyssey towards the acceptance of our finitude. But instead of dissolving in self-pity and misery, the Norwegians decided to
use this knowledge for some of their most touching, intense and monumental songs. We’re still here, aren’t we?
This is her “Songs Of Love And Death”, an inventory of everything that makes us human. The towering “Stand On Ceremony” is a lesson in
ritualistic beauty, the translucent flickering of “Mourners” can keep up with the strongest moments of “Sinners International”,
“Damned Le Monde” is a quick-tempered industrial rock hydra and “Terminal Love “is a stunning love song that moves you to tears of joy and releases endorphins in a multipack.
The bright and the soft, the dark and the light, the depression and the enthusiasm, they all flow together on “Orchestra Of Knives”, an album made
for the turmoil of our time. It was clear earlier, of course, but now it has finally been clarified: ZEROMANCER are the grand masters of electronic melancholy,
the designers of a world that feeds on our shadows. It’s been far too long since we felt understood after listening to a song.
