And Also The Trees’ captivating new album “Mother-of-Pearl Moon” was born from a series of extraordinary electric guitar improvisations recorded by guitarist Justin Jones in the hours before and after dusk during a month-long stay in solitude in 2020.
Each piece then evolved in its own way – the guitar, often left in its raw, unaltered form, is accompanied by his brother Simon’s voice providing imagery and narrative, Colin Ozanne’s clarinet and piano adding drive, color and harmony, Paul Hill’s drums creating depth… an occasional autoharp, a Moog… everything takes the listener from the depths of the English countryside far out into all directions.
The music is often cinematic and reminiscent of various movie genres from the 50s to the 70s. This is most evident in ‘This path through the meadow’, a song that explores the intertwining of man and nature in its animal and botanical forms, and in its video, in which the band appear to be performing in front of an imaginary screening.
The album’s title track transports the listener across the oceans to the Far East with its exotic gardens, still waters and the “mother-of-pearl moon”.
And Also The Trees (AATT) formed during the original post-punk era in rural Worcestershire, an environment that provides constant inspiration for a group whose music often explores the dark underbelly as well as the beauty of the British countryside.
They are known for their captivating live performances, unique style with mandolin-like electric guitar, evocative lyrics and gritty jazz rhythms – not to mention the creative independence they have maintained for over four decades.
Founded by singer Simon Jones and his brother Justin, the guitarist, AATT are present in the post-punk, alternative rock and gothic scene all over the world. They have released fifteen studio albums.
