IAMX breathes new spiritual life into his hyper-emotional electronic project with the new album “Fault Lines²”. It is the successor to the aggressive, iconic machinations that could be heard on the album “Fault Lines¹”, released in 2023.
This sequel is part mutant, part prom queen sister with throbbing bass monsters like “Neurosymphony” and “Infinite Fear Jets” transitioning ethereally into tracks like “The Ocean”, which features the superb vocal talents of Hafdis Huld on the Icelandic intro and outro. This is followed by tracks like the layered harmonies of “Deathless Wilds”, whose grim, grinding 6/8 beats command attention while longtime collaborator Janne Gezang urges the listener in punk rock fashion to accept whatever may come.
This album is IAMX at the height of beauty and despair, and is underscored by its “no fucks left to give” quirkiness. The psychological depths found in the music reflect a wisdom and acceptance hinted at in previous albums, but fully realized here. Trials become superpowers, neuroses become commitments, and radical self-love becomes the context and facilitation of self-realization. The vocals reflect the depth of this wisdom, with X sounding both dramatic and relaxed, with a confident ease that only comes from experience. Each vocal note contains the perfect amount of edge, squeak or breath; demonstrating a confidence from years on stage and in the studio that gives the listener a sense of intense intimacy.
The discord and disharmony of the universe is chaotically displayed on this album. Beauty rides on dirt, triplets on fours and fear on eroticism. The breaks in the soundscapes become fault lines.
